Best Paper Award at IEEE S&P 2012

31.05.2012 - Thorsten Holz

The paper "Don’t Trust Satellite Phones: A Security Analysis of Two Satphone Standards" was honored with the best paper award of the 2012 IEEE Symposium on Security & Privacy ("Oakland"), which took place in San Francisco on May 20-23, 2012.

The interdisciplinary team of the HGI (Benedikt Driessen, Thorsten Holz, Ralf Hund, Christof Paar and Carsten Willems) reconstructed and broke the encryption algorithms A5-GMR-1 and A5-GMR-2 for satphones and uncovered significant weaknesses. The best paper award is honoring the most relevant scientific paper of the conference. This year, the conference received more than 300 submissions, of which 40 were accepted for publication. More information on the project, including source code of the recovered crypto algorithms, is available at http://gmr.crypto.rub.de/
